How to Vote in New Zealand General Elections 2020?

  • The enrolled voters will get a voting information pack through mail a month before the Election Day.
  • For the General Elections, the voting starts from 2 weeks before the Election Day and ends on Election Day sharply at 07:00 PM.
  • Depending on your flexibility you can use this time for voting in General Elections.
  • Visit the polling place along with your Easy Vote Card, you can still vote if you don’t have one.
  • After entering the polling place you will be directed to the ballot paper issuing official.
  • Before issuing the ballot paper the official will ask you some questions to confirm your details.
  • Mostly the questions will be related to your name, residential address etc because the official confirms your name in the electoral roll.
  • If your answers are correct then you will be issued a voting paper or ballot paper.
  • In the General elections you have to cast 2 votes one is for the Party and the other one is for the MP Candidate.
  • The voting paper consists of 2 parts left & right, first part consists of party names, to vote, you  have to tick the circle in front of the party name and the second part consists of electorate names (candidate names), to vote them you have to choose one by ticking the circle in front of the candidate name.
  • After ticking the circles ( one for party and the second one for candidate) fold the voting paper in to half and drop the voting paper in to the ballot box.

Who Can Vote in New Zealand?

  • Must be a New Zealand Citizen
  • Age must be 18 years or above
  • Must be a resident of the Address for at least 1 month
  • Permanent resident with a stay of minimum 12 months
